Recently, after trying its predecessors, I finally got my Meta Quest 3, and oh boy, what a ride it has been.
I haven’t filmed myself unboxing it, but it felt magical. Hello future!
Meta Quest 3 Review: Way Beyond Reality
VR and AR tech has rapidly transformed from a niche fascination to a mainstream marvel, captivating us with its immersive and interactive experiences.

Here’s my take on it.
Design and Comfort
Out of the box, the Meta Quest 3 impresses with its compact form factor.
Weighing in at a relatively light 515 grams and adorned with three sensor modules at the front, it’s evident that Meta has aimed for a blend of functionality and wearability.
The headset hosts an array of four tracking cameras, two color cameras, and a depth sensor, laying the groundwork for a robust mixed reality experience.
However, comfort is a mixed bag.
Depending on your face shape, the pressure of it could be uncomfortable after a while of using. It’s literally a thing sitting on your face, after all.
But the headset is also adjustable, so even if you’re wearing glasses, you can fit them into Meta Quest. There is a little button on the inside of both sides that will let you adjust the width.
If you’re thinking about enhancing the headset to make it more comfortable: Consider investing in a silicone headset liner or a strap with cushioning.
Visuals and Performance
The visual experience offered by the Quest 3 is, for the most part, commendable.
The clarity and depth of the images are immersive, though not without flaw.
The periphery of the visual field tends toward blurriness, and the passthrough mode, while innovative, delivers a somewhat grainy and delayed representation of the real world.
Despite these minor setbacks, the device’s resolution of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye ensures a detailed and engaging virtual environment, with minimal screen door effect.
Controllers and Tracking
The redesigned controllers are a highlight, providing a comfortable and precise means of interaction within the virtual space.
The omission of the bulky tracking rings of its predecessor is a welcome change, allowing for more natural hand movements and a significant reduction in weight.
The battery choice, however, is a step back, with AA batteries limiting the convenience of recharging.
Hand tracking introduces an element of magic to the experience, offering an intuitive and surprisingly accurate method of navigation and interaction, even in less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
While the technology is not without its hiccups, the potential it presents for future applications is exciting.
Mixed Reality and Augmented Reality Features
The Quest 3’s venture into mixed reality is ambitious.
Its augmented reality features, alongside the hand tracking, promise a blend of the virtual and real worlds like never before.
Yet, the lack of sufficient applications leveraging this technology means it’s more of a glimpse into the future than a fully realized feature at present.
Connectivity and Ecosystem
Connecting to a PC wirelessly is straightforward, making it a versatile option for those who enjoy both standalone and PC-tethered VR experiences.
The Oculus Store remains well-stocked, ensuring users have access to a broad library of content.
However, the headset’s battery life, lasting roughly an hour and a half during gameplay, leaves room for improvement, especially for those looking to immerse themselves in longer sessions.
Best Choice For Newbies
The Meta Quest 3 embodies the next step in the evolution of virtual reality headsets, offering a potent mix of VR and AR capabilities housed within a sleek, user-friendly design.
While not without its limitations — such as comfort over long periods, battery life, and the nascent stage of its AR features — it stands out as one of the most accessible and versatile options on the market.
For newcomers to VR or those looking to upgrade, the Quest 3 offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of immersive entertainment.
Yet, it also serves as a reminder that we are still on the frontier of fully realizing the potential of mixed reality.
